Week 6 - The heat is on

[Posted by Ruth]

This past week makes me seriously rethink my dislike of air conditioning.  While our bedrooms, etc are air conditioned, the kitchen, living room, dining room level is not.  Most days in the summer there is enough of a breeze from the water to make this work.  Not so this past week.  So, meals were quickies, and mostly raw!

Here is the week 6 haul:

1 dozen eggs
1 bag mixed lettuce
1 bok choy
1 small garlic
2 bunches dandelion greens
2 bunches radishes
1 bunch baby carrots
3 bunches collard greens
5 summer squash
4 zucchini
red potatoes

I think I'm the most excited to have freshly dug potatoes this early in the season.  They will definitely find their way onto our plates in the somewhat cooler weather this weekend.  In the mean time, here is a great quick way a la the French to enjoy your radishes on a hot day...

Just cut a small slit in the end, insert a tiny pat of very cold, very good unsalted butter and give a quick dip in some coarse salt.  If you have it, Maldon salt is great for this.  If you do this for guests, put the butter in and chill the radishes until serving time.  Serve in a bowl over another bowl of ice and let them dip in salt themselves.  Pour yourself a glass of wine and wait for the heat to break!
